      Web training module 2023/24
(in English with live translation in French)

Mobilize the strengths of the individual

      Terry SOO-HOO, Ph.D

Director of the Family Therapy Clinic
      at MRI Palo Alto

This 2-session module introduces the important principles of the client's strengths-based strategic therapy approach to working with resource activation. This approach is based on the integration of different theories such as strategic therapy, family systems theory and solution-focused therapy. There will be discussions of clinical case examples as well as viewing videos of therapy sessions conducted by the presenter.

      Description

In this training, students discover the different theoretical and technical concepts of the strategic therapy approach based on the strengths of individuals.
Many videos will be presented in order to better understand the concepts of the approach, the elements of the framework and the different characteristics of the interventions (examination of the problem cycle, problem solving, strategic questioning, strategic communication, the stages of an intervention, how to frame the interventions to work in the cultural context of the client, the posture of the intervener, the therapeutic alliance, etc.) The selection of extracts from the videos will be viewed and worked on in groups, and commented by the trainer. Students will also have the opportunity to present their clinical cases for co-vision. This consultation will focus on how to use the principles of the force-based strategic approach to work on student cases.

These online courses will be given in English with consecutive oral translation into French.

      Objective of the module

      • Relate the elements of the observed sequences to the fundamental concepts of the force-based strategic approach.
      • Identify how the presenting problem relates to the cultural context of the client and design interventions that are consistent with this context
      • Identify the client's verbal/non-verbal language and learn to use it as a lever to initiate therapeutic change.
      • Identify perceptions of the problematic situation that keep clients stuck in repetitive and unproductive cycles of trying to find solutions.
      • Identify the important elements that contribute to cultivating the therapeutic alliance and observe how this impacts the client's motivation and commitment to therapeutic change.
      • Design effective interventions to break the non-productive interactional cycle.

      Module program

The sessions will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Paris time - with simultaneous translation in French)
