Coerced intervention
and indirect therapy

Principles and framework of intervention in the constraining context, Indirect Therapy and application of the model.

Benedicte SERVAIS

Trainer and co-founder at CICSeS

Intervening in a restrictive context means working with a patient/client who does not consult or does not really consult on his own initiative. The constraint is part of the framework of the intervention. The intervention consists of being able to use strategic resources in order to assess whether the patient has or by a request even if it comes under duress. The intervener cannot himself be the bearer of a request

Description

During this two-session module, the notions of client and patronage, binding context, implicit or explicit constraint, mandate, relevant system, tripartite interviews will be discussed. The main concepts of constraint therapy will be covered.

Objective of the module

  • Understand the principles of intervention in restrictive contexts, with people under regulatory or relational constraints.
  • Understand and master the intervention framework applied to situations under mandate (legal or moral constraint)
  • Identify the relational dynamics within the tripartite or even quadripartite relationship.
  • Handling relational strategies (notably paradoxical) in indirect therapies and coerced interventions.

Module program

• Session 1: Wednesday 05/14/2025 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Europe/Paris: Constrained intervention and indirect therapy - S1 - Bénédicte SERVAIS - EN2M8 - 2024/25
• Session 2: Wednesday 05/28/2025 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Europe/Paris: Constrained intervention and indirect therapy - S2 - Bénédicte SERVAIS - EN2M8 - 2024/25

Skills acquired at the end of the training (pedagogical objectives)

  • Understand and experiment with strategic questioning, by taking an interactional look at the position of each actor in the system (the constrained person and the constraining person) in order to contextualize the issues of the situation.
  • Clarify the framework of his intervention, as an intervener, in a context of constraint in order to empower the patient-client.
  • Assess the involvement of the patient-constrained client in order to establish clientele by agreeing, for example, on a minimum objective.
  • Evaluate the involvement of the binding force in order to determine if it can be mobilized.
  • Apply a sharp and strategic methodology to optimize relational dynamics.
  • Know how to find your bearings in the analysis of the relationship and the request for help in order to develop an intervention strategy during the interview.

Target audience and prerequisites

  • Any student or professional in the field of support and helping relationships with families, businesses and organizations
  • No prerequisites

Former

Bénédicte Servais: Co-founder and research associate at CICSeS (Belgium-France-Luxembourg), graduated in social sciences since 1989, first trained in the systemic approach oriented family therapy to specialize from 1996 in systemic and strategic model of Palo Alto.

She acquired mastery of the tool thanks to the teaching and supervision of Jean-Jacques Witteza, founder of the Gregory Bateson Institute, Professor Giorgio Nardone of the Center for Strategic Therapy in Arezzo and the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto. Torn between her private practice Relatio, supervision and training, she became interested in the latest developments in the interactional approach.
